Spanish in figures...
• Spanish is the world's 3rd most spoken
language, after Chinese and English, and ranks
2nd in terms of native speakers.
• At the end of the 19th century, 60 million
people were Spanish speakers. Today, nearly 500
million people across the world speak Spanish!
• Spanish is the mother tongue of
approximately 350 million people in 21
countries, and is widely spoken in another 21
countries where it is not an official language.
• Spanish is the second most used language
in international communication, and an official
language of the UN and its organizations.
We
all know that there are many countries in the
world whose main language is Spanish and knowing
how to speak the language not only foretells
that you are educated but well-cultured too. But
then, aside from this number one reason why
should one try to learn the Spanish language? If
you are still confused or not yet convinced why
you should learn Spanish, here are some of the
main reasons. You may not realize it at first
but there are several advantages that you could
get from learning the language which makes you
all the more flexible, educated, and cultured.
Commercial Reasons. One of the main
reasons to learn the Spanish language is to keep
up with the popular culture because right now,
as you may notice, there are more and more
products that are being sold which have Spanish
words on them. This only means that the Hispanic
influence in the country is strong and becoming
stronger that is why it is best that we learn
the language to not only relate to the market
but also to other people.
Work Reasons. Another reason why you
should learn the Spanish language is because it
is rapidly becoming one of the business
necessities. This means that when you learn the
language, you get to relate more to your
employees or workers who are Spanish speaking.
Plus, when you also attend business meetings or
conventions in other countries, Spanish is one
of the most used languages in the world, making
you more understandable by other people from
other countries especially if you frequently
travel to a Spanish speaking nation. Travel Yes,
it is perfectly possible to visit Mexico, Spain
and even Ecuatorial Guinea without speaking a
word of Spanish. But it isn't nearly half as
much fun. I remember about two decades ago —
when my Spanish was much less adequate than it
is today — when I met some mariachis on top of
one of the pyramids near Mexico City. Because I
spoke (albeit limited) Spanish, they wrote down
the words for me so I could sing along. It
turned out to be one of my most memorable travel
experiences, and one unlike what most tourists
have the opportunity to enjoy. Time and time
again while traveling in Mexico, Central America
and South America I have had doors opened to me
simply because I speak Spanish, allowing me to
see and do things that many other visitors do
not.
It's easy: Spanish is one of the
easiest foreign languages to learn. Much of its
vocabulary is similar to English's, and written
Spanish is almost completely phonetic: Look at
almost any Spanish word and you can tell how it
is pronounced. And while mastering the grammar
of Spanish can be a challenge, basic grammar is
straightforward enough that you can have
meaningful communication after only a few
lessons
Also, as you may notice around you, there
are more and more Spanish speaking people who
are now residing in the US. In fact, 35 per cent
of those people only speak Spanish and by
knowing the language, you get to relate to more
people easily. But Spanish is not only popular
in the US, when you go to Europe, Spanish is the
second most popular language and in fact,
Spanish is the official language on four
continents and is the mother tongue in 21
countries; this fact alone is reason enough to
Learn Spanish.
But above all, probably the most
outstanding reason to Learn Spanish is because
learning it is fun and it could take you to
places. Now, you could not only confine yourself
to watching, reading, and listening to English
language books, movies, or music. You now have a
wider option when it comes to your pastimes and
whether your reason may be for intellectual,
practical, or even sentimental purposes; it is
guaranteed that you would benefit from learning
how to speak Spanish.
